Empowering Veterans to Thrive in Agriculture

NRCS Frost Covered Buffer StripThe USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service recently provided state offices with additional guidance on the National Organic Initiative (NOI), National Seasonal High Tunnel Initiative (NSHTI), the Mississippi River Healthy Watersheds Initiative, the National On-Farm Energy Initiative (NOFEI), and the Working Lands for Wildlife (WLFW) Initiative.

These programs can help farmers implement important conservation practices and improve the sustainability of their operation, but they also represent opportunities to leverage additional funding for operating and infrastructure costs.  The Working Lands for Wildlife is a unique program in that it provides an exemption from environmental regulations in return for specified conservation practices.

You can find these programs discussed with the latest updates on the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition’s website. The Iowa NRCS site has information on all of the programs available to Iowa farmers along with important deadlines and sign-up dates.
